The Vanguard S&P 500 ETF is an exchange-traded fund that tracks the performance of the US S&P 500 index. The fund is managed by US-based brokerage and asset manager The Vanguard Group. The ETF is listed on the NYSE Arca exchange under the ticker ‘VOO’.
Investing in Vanguard S&P 500 ETF gives investors exposure to the 500 largest companies in the US based on their market capitalisation.
The S&P 500 (US 500) is market cap weighted, which means index components with a higher market capitalisation receive a higher weighting. According to index provider S&P Dow Jones Indices, the S&P 500 covers around 80% of available market capitalisation. Companies must have an unadjusted market cap of over $13.1bn to be eligible for inclusion.
The Vanguard S&P 500 ETF provides investors with indirect access to some of the world’s best-known brands including iPhone maker Apple (AAPL), Google-parent Alphabet (GOOGL) and electric car company Tesla (TSLA). Since the S&P 500 index is market cap weighted, its biggest constituents will dominate the performance of the S&P 500 index and thereby the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF.
As of 31 March 2022, Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), Amazon (AMZN), Tesla (TSLA), Alphabet Inc A (GPPGL), Alphabet Inc C (GOOG), Nvidia (NVDA), Berkshire Hathaway (BRKb), Meta Platforms (FB) and UnitedHealth Group (UNH) formed the top 10 constituents of the S&P 500 by weightage. Information technology, healthcare and consumer discretionary were the top three highest weighted sectors on the index.
