Initiated in 1993 at the base value of 200.00, the NASDAQ Biotechnology Index is a stock market index comprising securities of NASDAQ-listed companies that have been classified as either Biotechnology or Pharmaceuticals by the Industry Classification Benchmark.

What you need to know about the NASDAQ Biotechnology Index.

For a company to be included on the NASDAQ Biotechnology Index must meet certain criteria. For example, the security listing must be listed exclusively on the NASDAQ National Market; it must not be issued by an issuer currently in bankruptcy proceedings.; and it must have a market capitalisation of at least $200 million. The security must also have an average daily trading volume of at least 100,000 shares and the issuer of the security must be classified according to the Industry Classification Benchmark as either Biotechnology or Pharmaceuticals.
