What is TMX Group?
TMX Group owns a number of subsidiaries that operate equities, derivatives, fixed income and energy market exchanges. These include the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) and TSX Venture Exchange (TSXV).
As well as operating equities, derivatives, fixed income and energy market exchanges, TMX Group provides financial listings, trading, clearing, settling and depository facilities, information and technology services.
Where have you heard about TMX Group?
In February 2011 there were plans to merge TMX Group with the London Stock Exchange Group. This would have created the second largest stock exchange in the world with a market capitalisation of $5.9 billion.
However, in June 2011, the Maple Group Acquisition Corp. put in a rival bid. A special dividend was proposed to shareholders to sway their vote away from the Maple Group Acquisition Corp. but the merger was cancelled after failing to achieve the two-thirds majority required.
In 2012, Maple Group Acquisition Corp. took control of TMX Group with 91% of shares in a takeover offer worth about $3.8 billion.
What you need to know about TMX Group.
The Toronto Stock Exchange acquired the Canadian Venture Exchange in 2001 through parent company TSX Group Inc. and subsequently renamed it the TSX Venture Exchange. In 2007, the corporation acquired the Montreal Exchange and then became known as TMX Group.
