What is the SBF 120?

The SBF 120 definition refers to a French stock market index. Also known as Société des Bourses Françaises 120 Index, it is based on the 120 most actively traded French stocks listed on the Euronext exchange.

The index includes all 60 stocks from the famous CAC 40 and CAC Next 20 indices, as well as 60 additional stocks listed on the CAC Mid 60 Index. For comprising such a broad number of the largest French equities, the performance of this index is usually seen as a valid representation of the current state of the French stock market and the country’s economy as a whole.

Where have you heard about the SBF 120 Index?

Along with the CAC 40, the SBF 120 Index is the headline index of France. Many high-profile companies are constituents of the SBF 120, including well-known LVMH (MC), Total (FP), Danone (BN), Michelin (ML) and Ipsen (IPN)

Just like all major international indices, the performance of the SBF 120 Index is usually reported in financial market news. Newspapers and websites would typically talk about the index in reference to the overall performance of the French economy and its stock market.

What you need to know about the SBF 120 Index…

The SBF 120 Index consists of the most liquid French stocks that make up the CAC 40, the CAC Next 20 and the CAC Mid 60 indices:

  • The CAC 40 is a benchmark French stock market index, which represents a capitalisation-weighted measure of the 40 most significant stocks on Euronext Paris.
  • The CAC Next 20 is a stock market index traded on Euronext Paris, gathering the 20 companies whose market capitalisations are ranked after those of the CAC 40 constituents.
  • The CAC Mid 60 is a French mid-cap stock market index, which represents the country’s 60 largest equities, beyond the CAC 40 and the CAC Next 20 indices, listed on the Premier Marché and Second Marché on the Euronext exchange.

Starting with the value of 1,000 points on December 31, 1990, the index has been continuously published and calculated since April 18, 1994. The SBF 120 is updated every 30 seconds during the trading day from 9am to 5:30pm. Its composition is reviewed annually at the end of June by an independent Index Steering Committee.
