This index is one of eight that form the Philippine Stock Exchange. It was previously known as the PSE Financial Index until January 2006, when it was renamed as part of a reclassification of the PSE's indices.

Apart from the PSEi and the PSE All Shares Index, all the other indices of the PSE are sector indices, based on a company's main source of revenue. The PSE Financials Index, or FIN, is also home to companies listed on the PSEi, such as the Bank of the Philippine Islands and Metrobank. Other companies listed include the China Banking Corporation, East West Bank and Union Bank of the Philippines.
