Walmart, Inc. (WMT) is an American multinational retail corporation that operates a chain of discount department stores, grocery stores and hypermarkets. Incorporated in 1969, the business offers a wide assortment from groceries and entertainment to sporting goods and crafts. Presently, the company has over 11,400 stores and clubs in over 27 countries. Walmart operates under 55 different names, including Asda in the UK, Walmart de México y Centroamérica in Mexico and Central America, Seiyu Group in Japan and Best Price in India.
The company runs its business in three segments: Walmart US, Walmart International and Sam's Club retail warehouses.
According to the Fortune Global 500 list, Walmart was the world's largest company by revenue and the largest US grocery retailer in 2019. Moreover, the business is known as the globe’s largest private employer having 2.2 million people working for the brand.
Walmart shares are listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol WMT. The company is a constituent of the S&P 100 Index, the S&P 500 Index and the Dow Jones Industrial Average Index.

Walmart was founded by Sam Walton in 1962 and incorporated in 1969. By 1988, it was the most profitable retailer in the US and became the largest in revenue terms by 1989. Overseas investments, such as the 1999 acquisition of Asda in the UK, transformed the business into an international industry’s player.
In 2016, Walmart launched a plan to become the most trusted retailer by hitting specific targets by 2025. These are focused on sustainability, empowering its employees and improving the lives of people around the world.
In its fiscal 2020 year, Walmart reported total revenue of $523.96 billion, an increase of 1.9% on the previous year. Consolidated operating income was $17.38 billion. The company generated $25.3 billion in operating cash flow and returned $11.8 billion to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases.

On October 1, 1970, Walmart went public by issuing 300,000 shares priced at $16.50 each. On August 25, 1972, the company's common stock began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol WMT.

Since 2000, the Walmart share value had generally fluctuated somewhere between $50 and $100. In January 2018, the stock finally passed the $100 per share mark. Walmart shares closed 2019 at $118.84.
