Virgin Galactic is the vertically integrated aerospace company and the world’s first commercial spaceline. It is developing and operating a new generation of space vehicles with the mission to open up space to ordinary people.
The company operates within the Virgin Group and develops commercial spacecraft to be able to launch suborbital science missions and space flights for space tourists. SpaceShipTwo is Virgin Galactic’s suborbital spacecraft, which is air launched from White Knight Two, a carrier airplane.
Virgin Galactic was founded in 2004 by British entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson, the founder of Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Group. Originally, Richard Branson planned to conduct a maiden flight at the end of 2009, but it was delayed for several years.
In December 2018, VSS Unity (a SpaceShipTwo-class suborbital rocket-powered crewed spaceplane) conducted the first suborbital space flight. The company plans its next spaceflight test in May 2021, and announced further delay of commercial space flights until early 2022.
In 2010, Aabar Investments, the sovereign wealth fund of Abu Dhabi, bought a 31.8 per cent stake in Virgin Galactic for $280 million, and got exclusive rights for launching scientific and tourist space flights from the UAE capital. In 2011, Aabar invested an additional $110 million, raising its stake in the company to 37.8 per cent.
