MercadoLibre Inc (MELI) is the largest online commerce and payments company in Latin America. Headquartered in Buenos Aires, Argentina, it offers retail, digital payments and e-commerce services.
MELI operates in 18 countries, including Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Venezuela and Peru.
Founded in 1999, the company offers six integrated e-commerce and digital payments services: MercadoLibre Marketplace, MercadoPago Fintech platform, Mercado Envios logistics service, MercadoLibre Ads solution, MercadoLibre Classifieds service and Mercado Shops online storefronts solution.
MercadoLibre Marketplace is an e-commerce platform which allows users to list merchandise and conduct sales and purchases digitally. The platform offers a wide range of products grouped in categories, including apparel and beauty, home goods, automotive, consumer electronics, toys, books to consumer packaged goods.
MercadoEnvios is a logistic service for marketplace users. The service allows sellers to use third-party carriers and other logistic service providers as well as access to warehousing service. To complement the logistic service and improve delivery times, MELI launched Meli Air in 2020.
The company has also developed Meli Places, a network of neighbourhood stores where buyers and sellers can pick-up, drop-off or return packages.
MercadoPago is a fully integrated digital payment system that was created to make transactions on Mercadolibre Marketplace easier. The platform has evolved into a full ecosystem of financial technology solutions. Users of MercadoPago in Brazil can also use the platform to trade selected global cryptocurrencies and stablecoins.
The company’s advertising platform, Mercado Ads, enables businesses to promote their products and services on the internet.
MercadoLibre Classifieds is an online classified listing service. Users can list and purchase motor vehicles, real estate and services in the countries where MercadoLibre operates. Complementing the services is its digital storefront solution, Mercado Shops which allows users to set up, manage and promote their own digital stores. Hosted by MercadoLibre, users can create a store for free and integrate the store with Mercado Libre’s Marketplaces.
Since the first quarter of 2018, the company has suspended payment of dividends. Its board of directors concluded there were multiple investment opportunities that could generate greater returns to shareholders investing capital into the business over a dividend policy.
The company went public on 10 August 2007. MELI stock price was quoted at $18 per share on its debut. Its stock is traded on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol MELI.
