Exxon Mobil Company profile

ExxonMobil (XOM) is one of the world’s largest publicly traded energy providers and chemical manufacturers.

The firm was founded on 30 November 1999 with the merger of Exxon Corporation and Mobil Corporation. However, its history goes back 135 years when it started off as a regional kerosene provider in the US before expanding globally in the Upstream, Downstream and Chemical businesses. 

Currently, the firm explores for and produces natural gas; manufactures and supplies essential products including gasoline and car lubricants; deploys technologies across its global operations and has a group of scientists who work on developing low emission breakthroughs, biofuels and reducing methane emissions. 

The firm’s global brands include:

  • ExxonMobil: global energy provider and chemical manufacturer 
  • ExxonMobil Chemical: converts crude oil into petrochemicals in the US and China
  • Exxon: sells fuels, services and lubricants
  • Mobil: sells fuels, services and lubricants
  • Esso: sells fuels, services and lubricants
  • XTO Energy: develops tight gas, shale gas and unconventional crude oil resources in the US.

ExxonMobil has partnered with over 80 universities globally including Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford, National University of Singapore and many more, to work on solutions for meeting global energy demand and reducing carbon emission. 

In 2019, the company launched a collaboration with the US Department of Energy’s National Labs in biofuel, carbon capture and storage and lifecycle analysis research. The firm also collaborated with Qatar Petroleum in 2005 and established the Save The Tiger Fund in 1995 to which it donates $1m (£745,000) annually. 

The company is traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and is also part of the S&P 500 Index.
