A chartist – or technical analyst – is someone who tracks the historical prices of an investment, such as equities, currencies and commodities, to predict its future movement. They’re so-called because they use charts or graphs to carry out this work.

You may have heard about chartists when looking for help with your investments. This school of thought doesn’t believe that the prices of investments are arbitrary. In fact they believe that history always repeats itself.

Chartists look to pinpoint patterns and trends in prices through mathematically based indicators that calculate trends. Chartists believe that it’s possible to judge when the optimum time is to buy or sell an investment.
