Luxembourg is the biggest investment fund domicile in Europe and the association exists to promote this industry. It has more than 1,000 member funds, with associate membership also available to entities that are not based in Luxembourg.

The non-profit organisation was founded in 1988 and opened itself to additional members outside of investment funds in April 2000. Investment structures that are domiciled in Luxembourg are distributed around the world, particularly in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, and the association represents the sector in financial and in economic missions organised by the Luxembourg government worldwide. Its chairman is Denise Voss, conducting officer at Franklin Templeton Investments Luxembourg, who was re-elected in 2017.
