It was founded in 1846 by five newspapers as a quicker and cheaper way to transmit news of the Mexican War. Initially established as a newswire service, AP began distributing news to radio stations in 1941 and set up a video agency in 1994. According to its website, AP publishes 2,000 stories per day and one million photos per year. The agency is owned by its contributing newspapers and radio and TV stations and governed by a board of directors who appointed Steven Swartz as chairman in April 2017.
