Taiwan Semiconductor Company profile

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC, TSM) was founded in 1987 by Morris Chang and was established as the world’s first dedicated semiconductor foundry.

The company focuses on the manufacturing and selling of semiconductor chips used in mobile phones, laptops and cars among other technologies for a number of clients including Apple (AAPL), Sony (SNE), Nvidia (NVDA) and Intel Core (INTC)

Its global operations expand into Asia, Europe and North America. 

The company provides customer support, account management and engineering services through its offices in North America, Europe, Japan, China and South Korea. 

Over the years, the firm opened 17 chipmaking fabrication facilities (fabs) spread across Taiwan, China and the US.

TSMC aims to drive technological advancement and to integrate green manufacturing into its work. The firm’s goal is to “become the global standard of eco-friendly corporations” by integrating green management into its daily operations. 

In 2004, the company founded its volunteering association which turned into the TSMC Charity Foundation by June 2017. In addition to a charity, TSMC also manages a Museum of Innovation that is based next to its headquarters in Taiwan. 

In 2020, Forbes ranked the company among the World’s Best Employers while The Wall Street Journal ranked TSMC among the 100 Most Sustainably Managed Companies in the World. 

On 8 October 1997, the firm became the first Taiwanese company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).
