Where did PayPal begin?
Founded in 1998 as Confinity, the company initially focused on security software. In 1999, Confinity launched the initial PayPal system. In 2000, the company completed a merger with Elon Musk’s X.com, who at the time concentrated on online banking.
Following the merger, the partners began to focus more on the online money transfer services of PayPal with the company finally undergoing its initial public offering in 2002. It was obtained as a subsidiary of eBay for a total of $1.5 billion.
Currently, PayPal operates as an independent spin-off from eBay. A status that it acquired in 2015. Later in that same year, the entity went public for the second time and was valued at $46 billion.

2016 saw the introduction of PayPal’s latest innovation, the PayPal.me peer-to-peer payment platform.
