Founded in 2004 as Gaming VC Holdings, Entain made several acquisitions in its early years, taking over Casino Club in 2004 and BetBoo in 2009. In 2010, the group reorganised as GVC Holdings. In 2012, it announced a joint venture with William Hill, then the UK's biggest bookmaker (now an online gambling company owned since April 2021 by Caesars Entertainment, the Nevada-based casino operator) to purchase Sportingbet in a deal worth £530m.

The company’s largest acquisition came in 2018 with the £4bn purchase of British gambling company Ladbrokes Coral, a move that cemented GVC Holdings’ position as the UK’s largest betting group. With the bulk of the company’s operations taking place in the UK and Europe, GVC looked to extend its reach to the US. To capitalise on the newly liberalised US sport betting market, GVC made a $200m deal with MGM Resorts (MGM) to become leading provider of sports and online betting at MGM casinos and resorts.

In December 2020, GVC changed its name to Entain plc, following a shareholder vote. Today, it is one of the world’s largest sports betting and online gaming companies, operating in more than 20 jurisdictions and employing more than 24,000 people across five continents. Its ambition is to be the world-leader in sports betting and gaming entertainment.

In FY 2020, the group posted revenue of £3.6bn, in line with FY 2019, with operating profits of £530m. The group reported exceptional performance from its US operation, increasing market share to 18%, with full year revenue at $178m, significantly ahead of expectations.
