Jeon Do-yeon earns Gotham Awards lead acting nomination for Possible Love
South Korean actress Jeon Do-yeon has been nominated for a lead performance award at the 36th Gotham Awards in the United States for her role in Lee Chang-dong’s film, “Possible Love.”
According to the Gotham Awards’ official website on Wednesday, Possible Love received three nominations at the 36th Gotham Awards, including Best International Feature, Best Original Screenplay and Outstanding Lead Performance.
Lee and co-writer Oh Jung-mi were nominated for Best Original Screenplay, while Jeon will compete for Outstanding Lead Performance against internationally renowned actors including Julianne Moore, Ian McKellen, and John Malkovich.
The Netflix film Possible Love tells the story of two married couples ? a laid-off worker and his wife, and a documentary filmmaker and his spouse ? whose lives become intertwined through the making of a film, forcing them to confront their different circumstances and hidden desires.
The film marks Lee’s first new work in eight years since “Burning” (2018) and stars Jeon, Sul Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung and Cho Yeo-jeong.
Possible Love was invited to compete at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival in September, where it won the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize.
It subsequently attracted attention with screenings at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival and the 31st Busan International Film Festival.
Jeon, who won Best Actress at the 60th Cannes Film Festival in 2007 for her performance in Lee’s “Secret Sunshine,” is now seeking to add a Gotham Award for Outstanding Lead Performance to her achievements with Possible Love.
Expectations are also growing for her prospects at the Academy Awards, commonly known as the Oscars.
Interest in her awards-season campaign has intensified following reports that U.S. entertainment publication The Hollywood Reporter identified Jeon as a potential nominee for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
The Gotham Awards recognize original and experimental works, primarily in the American independent film industry.
The Best International Feature category was introduced in 2020.
Last year, director Park Chan-wook’s “No Other Choice” received three nominations, including Best International Feature, Best Adapted Screenplay and Outstanding Lead Performance for actor Lee Byung-hun.
Possible Love was released in Korean theaters on September 23 and is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on November 6.
The 36th Gotham Awards ceremony will take place in New York on November 30.
