What is the modern history of Bank of New York Mellon?
BNY Mellon traces its history all the way back to 1784, when Alexander Hamilton founded the Bank of New York. There was a long series of mergers in the 20thcentury, with the bank making 33 acquisitions in the five-year period from 1993 to 1998 alone. In 2006, Bank of New York exited retail banking and announced that it would merge with Mellon Financial Corporation. The deal was valued at $16.5 billion, and the merger was finalised in July 2007.
Since the merger, BNY Mellon has made further acquisitions. These include Insight Investment in 2009; Global Investment Servicing Inc. in 2010; and Talon Asset Management's wealth management business in 2011. BNY Mellon announced in 2015 that it would pay $180 million to settle a forex-related putative class action lawsuit. The move came after federal and state authorities accused BNY Mellon of malpractice.

BNY Mellon reported full year 2017 earnings of $3.9 billion, or $3.72 per common share – an increase of 18%. Total revenue was up 2%, and total expense was up 4%.
At his debut investor day in March 2018, CEO Charles Scharf said BNY Mellon could drive revenue growth through its investment management business – and especially through its wealth arm. And even after years of cost-cutting, there was still some “juice” left as the company sought further efficiencies, he said.
