The brand is renowned as a developer and publisher of the tabletop wargames The Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game, The Hobbit Strategy Battle Game, and Warhammer 40,000. The company’s history began with its establishment in 1975 by the gaming enthusiasts Steve Jackson, John Peake, and Ian Livingstone. The business originally manufactured wooden board games, such as mancala, backgammon, Go, and Nine Men's Morris. Later, it became an importer of Dungeons & Dragons, the US role-playing game, and, shortly after, a publisher of role-playing games and wargames in its own right.
