CEE MARKETS-Currencies tread water ahead of US CPI data
WARSAW, Oct 14 (Reuters) - Central and Eastern European currencies moved sideways on Wednesday as markets awaited US inflation data that could offer clues to the Federal Reserve's interest-rate outlook.
Here's a round-up of the currency markets in the region:
"From a market perspective, the most significant event will be the release of US CPI inflation data for September...anticipation of these figures may somewhat dampen volatility," Bank Millennium wrote in a note
The data will be released at 1230 GMT, and economists estimate headline inflation accelerated to an annual 3.6% in September
The Hungarian forint and Polish zloty were both 0.05% firmer against the euro at 363.80 and 4.369 respectively
"Monday was obviously very quiet because it was a US holiday and this week we have some IMF conferences somewhere so the market is slightly subdued and there's not much activity going on," said an FX trader in Warsaw
A host of global finance chiefs are in Bangkok, where the International Monetary Fund and World Bank are holding annual meetings, and IMF fiscal affairs chief Rodrigo Valdes said the body has "dialled up" the urgency of its call for governments to rein in growing debts
The Czech crown was 0.05% weaker at 24.364 to the euro
Statistics office data showed on Tuesday that Czech consumer prices rose 2.5% on a yearly basis in September, confirming a flash estimate
Commerzbank said Czech inflation developments made a November interest rate hike more likely
"But one fine-tuning hike will not rescue CZK: inflation will accelerate faster than CNB will raise rates, pushing the real interest rate into negative and keeping the koruna under pressure," Commerzbank said
