Genesis Energy provides midstream transportation services for oil, gas and chemical.
Formed in 1996, Genesis Energy is a publicly traded limited partnership. Based in Houston, Texas, the company went public on 27 November 1996. Shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol ‘GEL’.
The company has four business segments: offshore pipeline transportation; sodium minerals and sulphur services; onshore facilities and transportation; and marine transportation. It operates primarily in the US Gulf Coast region and Wyoming.
The company operates 2,400 miles of pipelines to deliver oil and natural gas produced from reservoirs in the Gulf of Mexico to onshore refining centres.
The Sodium Minerals and Sulphur service consists of Alkali and Refinery Services. Acquired by Genesis Energy on 1 September 2017, Alkali operates the world’s largest known deposit of trona ore, the raw material for soda ash, which is used for production of other chemicals such as sodium bicarbonate and sodium phosphates. Located in Green River, Wyoming, Alkali produces 4 million tonnes of soda ash a year.
The Refinery Service, or TDC, offers services that include engineering, design and construction to treating sour gas and flare gas.
The Onshore Facilities and Transportation business owns and leases an integrated suite of onshore crude oil and refined products infrastructure, including pipelines, trucks, terminals, railcars and rail loading.
The Marine Transportation service provides transportation services by tank barge primarily for refined petroleum products, including heavy fuel oil and asphalt, as well as crude oil.
On 18 November 2021, Genesis Energy announced completion of the sale of a 36% equity interest in the company’s Cameron Highway Oil Pipeline System (CHOPS) to an undisclosed party. The sale resulted in gross proceeds of $481m to Genesis. The company owns a 64% stake in CHOPS and remains the pipeline’s operator.
