Lonza to buy five US sites from Merck KGaA
Nov 3 (Reuters) - Contract drug manufacturer Lonza LONN.S will more than double its US footprint after agreeing to buy five manufacturing sites in the country from Merck KGaA MRCG.DE, the Swiss company said on Tuesday.
The deal will bring the number of Lonza's US sites to nine, and expand its cell and gene therapy capabilities, while Germany's Merck continues its shift towards a concentrated life science portfolio.
The deal is valued in a range of low- to mid-triple-digit million Swiss francs, the companies said, and is expected to close in the middle of next year.
Around 1,100 employees are set to join Lonza's workforce under the transaction.
Barclays analysts described the deal as "strategically positive" for Lonza, pointing to upside from utilisation and margin improvement.
