NVIDIA Corp
Nvidia Corporation (NVDA) is a fast-growing American technology company engaged in designing and manufacturing of computer graphics processors, chipsets and related multimedia software. Based in Santa Clara, California, the firm is known as a market leader in the design of graphics processing units (GPUs) for the gaming market, as well as system on chips (SOCs) for the automotive and mobile computing markets.
Nvidia operates more than 40 regional offices all over the world including both Americas, Europe and Asia. The company has a team of over 13,500 employees working worldwide and is constantly growing.
Nvidia’s most recognized GPU product line, known as "GeForce", is in direct competition with Advanced Micro Devices' (AMD) "Radeon" products. The company’s other key competitors include Intel (INTC) and Qualcomm (QCOM).
Nvidia shares are listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market under the ticker symbol NVDA. The company is a constituent of the US Tech 100 Index, the S&P 100 Index and the S&P 500 Index.
In April 1993, Nvidia was founded by Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem. Before starting the company, Huang was a director of CoreWare at LSI Logic and a microprocessor designer at AMD, while Malachowsky and Priem both worked as engineers at Sun Microsystems. The initial capital comprised $40,000, with the firm consequently receiving $20 million of venture capital funding from Sequoia Capital and others.
A big coup early on for the company came after the success of the GeForce GPUs, which led to Nvidia winning a contract to develop graphics hardware for the Microsoft's (MSFT) Xbox game console, earning the firm a $200 million advance. In December 2004, it was announced that Nvidia would assist Sony (SNE) with the design of the RSX graphics processor in the PlayStation 3 game console.
Over the years, Nvidia has grown into a dominant force in the graphics market. Along with the introduction of new products that broadened its line, acquisitions have been one of the key growth strategies for the business. Some of the most prominent purchases included AGEIA Technologies in 2008, PGI in 2013, TransGaming in 2015, Mellanox Technologies in 2019, and SwiftStack and Cumulus Networks in 2020.
