Founded by Dan Larimer and Ned Scott, the Steem network went live on 24 March 2016, and Steemit launched in July 2016. The platform was developed to help members of the community monetise their digital content without the need for advertising or selling of user data that is commonplace among social media sites.
Steemit aims to promote content that provides users with value, be it a video, meme, or blog post. Cryptocurrency rewards scale in line with post popularity and engagement – posts that are being actively shared, upvoted or discussed by the community will earn significantly more than those that are not. Rewards are distributed in STEEM coin, of which there are approximately 375,000,000 in circulation.
