AMC CEO asks Twitter if theatre chain should accept Dogecoin
15:02, 22 September 2021
AMC Entertainment CEO Adam Aron asked his roughly 172,000 Twitter followers if the movie theatre operator should accept cryptocurrency Dogecoin as payment for movie tickets and concessions. Twitter’s collective answer was a resounding "Yes".
AMC shares are trading higher Wednesday, to $40.12 (£29.37), up from the $38.50 opening price.
"Do you think AMC should explore accepting Dogecoin?" Aron asked in a poll posted Tuesday afternoon, noting AMC’s previously announced plans to begin accepting other crypto assets as payment.
Majority voted in favour
As of 11:00 am EDT Wednesday, 68.4% of the 133,509 votes were for "Yes, for sure do it." Additionally, of the roughly 13,000 likes Aron’s tweet received, one was presumably from Tesla CEO – and Dogecoin enthusiast – Elon Musk.
"@ElonMusk liked my Dogecoin Twitter Poll Tweet," Aron reported Wednesday morning.
AMC announced it would begin accepting Bitcoin as payment during its earnings call on 9 August and recently expanded that to include Bitcoin Cash, Etherium and Litecoin.
AMC also began last week airing live National Football League games in its theatres through DIRECTV's Sunday Ticket package.
