London Stock Exchange Group plc (LSEG) is a global market infrastructure and capital markets business. The company represents Europe’s largest capital market with a deep pool of liquidity and international investors.
It gathers issuers from all over the world to undergo initial public offerings (IPO) and listings. Operating at the heart of global financial markets with direct access to Chinese and US investors, London Stock Exchange enjoys the most diverse investor base.
The LSEG grants open access to global financial markets, including international equity, bond and derivatives markets. It has a diversified global business, focused on information services, risk and balance sheet management and capital formation.
The group contributes to global financial stability and ensures sustainable economic growth.
The LSE group organises their operations into six divisions: Capital Markets; Post Trade Services-CC & G and Monte Titoli, largely connected with Borsa Italiana; Post Trade Services-LCH, centred around LSE's clearing house; Information Services; Technology Services; and other.
At the LSE, there are two major markets on which companies trade:
- Main market. It is home to more than 1,300 large companies from 70 countries. Over the past ten years, the business has brought £366bn through new and further issues by the companies from the Main Market. The “footsie” (FTSE 100 index) Is considered the major stock index, comprising 100 UK companies with the highest capitalization traded on the LSE’s Main Market.
- Alternative instrument market. This is the LSE’s international market for smaller businesses, including venture capital-backed, early-stage and more established companies.
LSE stock history
London Stock Exchange is one of the world’s oldest stock exchanges. The company prides itself on tracing its history back more than 300 years to 1698. The LSE group was established in October 2007 when the London Stock Exchange merged with Borsa Italiana, the Milan Stock Exchange.
Headquartered in London, the UK, London Stock Exchange group has an international team of over 4,586 people. The LSE is home to a series of FTSE indices, which include a benchmark FTSE 100 index, FTSE 250, FTSE 350, FTSE All-Share and FTSE AIM UK 50 Indices.

In July 2001, London Stock Exchange became a public company listed on its own market. London Stock Exchange shares are traded on the London Stock Exchange (LSE). The company belongs to the FTSE 250 Index.
The London Stock Exchange stock price showed that the company was having a remarkable 2020 when its stocks reached their highest price in five years, peaking at £8,542 per share back on February 19, before the coronavirus sell-off went down and its shares ended up losing nearly 27 per cent of their value.
