Olaplex is a US beauty company that specialises in the development of hair-care products for at-home use and professional hairstyling. 

 The company was founded in 2014 and has grown from offering three initial products, which were sold exclusively through professional channels, to a broader range of products and a direct-to-customer (DTC) channel. 

 In September 2021, Olaplex product portfolio consisted of nine hair care products, designed to deliver holistic effects for hair health. The company has developed a special bond-building technology designed to repair damaged hair bonds. It patented a proprietary ingredient called Bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate (Bis-amino), which is used across the company’s products.

 According to the company’s SEC-filing, it has more than 100 patents to protect its technology.

 The company’s professional channel, which includes products used by hairstylists, comprised 55% of Olaplex total net sales in 2020 and represented a 59%  growth from 2019 to 2020. 

 In 2018 the company  expanded its retail presence. Olaplex built a DTC channel and a specialty retail channel. The DTC channel, which includes sales from OLAPLEX.com and third-party e-commerce platforms, grew 260% from 2019 to 2020 and accounted for 27% of the company’s total net sales in 2020. Its specialty retail channel grew 75% from 2019 to 2020 and accounted for 18% of the company’s total net sales in 2020. 

The company has reported robust financial performance for the past two years. Net sales increased from $148.2m in 2019 to $282.3m in 2020, representing a 90% increase. For the six months ended 30 June 2021, Olaplex reported $270.2m, which is 171% higher than $99.6m, gained for the same period ended 30 June 2020.
