Luminar Technologies Inc Company profile
Luminar Technologies operates an autonomous vehicle sensor and software company. Founded in 2012 and headquartered in Orlando, Florida, Luminar is a strong contender in the race to build vehicles that don’t require human intervention.
The company operates in two major segments, autonomous solutions and other component sales. The autonomous solutions division designs, manufactures and sells light detection and ranging (lidar) sensors and related autonomous software solutions for original equipment manufacturers in the automobile sector, including commercial vehicles and robo-taxis.
The other component sales segment develops ultra-sensitive pixel-based sensors and deals in consulting, designing and testing non-standard integrated circuits for private companies, government and defence contractors.
Luminar’s Iris lidar sensors, which have a 250-metre range, have been installed in several self-driving cars and will reportedly be used in a future Toyota RAV4 model. Series production of Volvo vehicles with Luminar’s laser sensors embedded in the roof will be in effect by the end of 2022.
Luminar currently employs 500 people and has a market cap of $5bn. The company also works with NASA and is advancing a laser-based technology designed to help spacecraft land on a proverbial dime for missions to the Moon and Mars.
Luminar went public on the Nasdaq stock exchange via a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) deal with Gores Metropoulos in December 2020 and trades under the ticker LAZR.
