When founder and CEO Will Shu moved to London in 2013, he found that the majority of the city’s restaurants did not offer a delivery service. Alongside his friend Greg Orlowski, the pair founded Deliveroo with the goal of enabling as many people as possible to have food delivered to their doorsteps. By partnering with local businesses, restaurants increase their revenues while allowing Deliveroo to handle the delivery service.
Customers place and pay for their order through Deliveroo’s online platform, from a list of available restaurants based on their postcode. Deliveroo makes its money by charging a set delivery fee, as well as an agreed percentage of each order from its restaurant partners. Utilising its network of local riders, the company’s innovative mobile application assigns the job to the closest one, who collects the order from the restaurant and delivers it to the customer’s door.
The firm has been through 11 rounds of funding since 2014, raising over $1.7bn. This has enabled the business to aggressively expand its operations. As of March 2021, Deliveroo had presence in 11 countries, established partnerships with 140,000 restaurants, and had over 100,000 riders around the globe.
