US Steel Company profile
United States Steel Corporation (X) is an integrated steel producer headquartered in Pittsburgh, US. The company operates over 20 steel mills, finishing facilities and distribution centres across the US, along with several joint ventures with other companies. In addition to its US centres, it operates an integrated steelmaking facility in Košice, Slovakia with an annual raw steel capability of five million tonnes. US Steel is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the ticker ‘X’.
US Steel’s largest steel manufacturing plant, Gary Works, is located in Gary, Indiana, US. The flagship plant has both steelmaking and finishing facilities, and has an annual raw steelmaking capability of 7.5 million net tonnes.
The plant produces hot-rolled, cold-rolled and galvanised sheet products for customers in the automotive, metal building components, home construction and appliance markets, along with tin products that are used by customers in the container industry for making food and beverage containers, aerosol cans, paint cans and pails, and others.
US Steel serves oil and gas industry customers with tubular products. The company also operates coke- and iron-ore production and real estate businesses in the US via its subsidiary, USS Real Estate.
The company has made its first proof of concept called verdeX steel, which is made with up to 90% recycled steel content, according to its website, to lessen its carbon footprint by using less water and energy than in its traditional steel-making methods, and focusing more on recycling.
The verdeX steel’s substrate is made at the Big River Mill located in Arkansas, US. According to the company, the Big River Mill is the world’s first Flex Mill, which merges the flexibility and technological advancements of a mini mill with the wide product mix and superior grades of an integrated mill.
David Burrit has been the president and chief executive officer of United States Steel Corp since 2017. Burrit was formerly the chief financial officer of construction and mining equipment maker Caterpillar (CAT).
