Slack Technologies, Inc. (WORK) is a software company that offers cloud-based tools and services to facilitate workplace collaboration. The business is well-known for its platform Slack, a team communication application that provides real-time messaging, video and voice calls as well as organised conversations, integrated file sharing, searchable history and other capabilities. In 2009, the company was initially founded as Tiny Speck, Inc. with the goal of creating a computer game called Glitch. The Slack tool was used internally by the firm during the game’s development. However, after Glitch failed, Slack’s real-time collaboration platform was unveiled to the public in 2013. In August 2014, the business changed its name to Slack Technologies.

Before going public, the company raised a total of $1.4 billion in funding over 12 rounds. The list of its early investors includes many of the best-recognised firms in the world, such as Andreessen Horowitz, Accel Partners, Horizons Ventures, KPCB, Social+Capital, IVP, Google Ventures and Spark Growth.

Throughout its history, Slack Technologies has made a number of acquisitions to improve its platform’s functionality. Those include Spaces in 2014 and Screenhero in 2015, as well as Missions, Stride, HipChat and Astro Technology in 2018.

While the NYSE set a reference price of $26 per share, Slack shares stormed out of the gate on its market debut on June 20, 2019, opening at $38.50. WORK stock quickly climbed as high as $41.85 and closed its first trading day at $38.62, giving the company a valuation of $19.5 billion.

Throughout the rest of 2019, the stock was rather volatile, with Slack stock quote falling as low as $20.13 in November. The company’s shares closed 2019 at $22.48 a piece.
