Palantir Technologies Inc (PLTR) is a North American software company that specialises in big data analytics. Founded in 2003 and headquartered in Denver, Colorado, it offers a suite of software applications for integrating, analysing and visualising different types of data, including structured, unstructured, relational, temporal and geospatial data. It serves customers all around the world, with its client base ranging from state and local governments to financial businesses and healthcare companies.

On September 30, 2020, Palantir Technologies debuted on the stock market via a direct public offering, listing its shares under the ticker symbol PLTR on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).

Palantir was founded in 2003 by Peter Thiel, Stephen Cohen, Nathan Gettings, Alex Karp and Joe Lonsdale. Initially, it was developing a software for the US intelligence community to assist in counterterrorism investigations and operations. However, it soon expanded to build custom software platforms for commercial enterprises in the financial, healthcare, energy and manufacturing sectors. In the first half of 2020, Palantir’s software was used by 125 customers across 36 industries in more than 150 countries.

Today, the company has three principal products: Gotham, Foundry and Metropolis. Gotham is used by counter-terrorism analysts at defence and intelligence agencies, enabling them to identify patterns within datasets, ranging from signals from intelligence sources to reports from confidential informants. Foundry was built for commercial institutions and is used by corporate clients, such as Morgan Stanley, Airbus and Merck KGaA, to manage and interpret the data involved in large projects. Metropolis is used by hedge funds, banks and financial services firms.

Prior to the stock market listing, the company had raised a total of $2.5bn since its founding.
