The Company is developing its lead drug candidate, Berubicin for the treatment of glioblastoma. Glioblastoma are tumors that arise from astrocytes, which are star-shaped cells making up the supportive tissue of the brain. Berubicin is an anthracycline, a class of drugs that are among the chemotherapy drugs, which intercalates into Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and interrupts topoisomerase II activity, resulting in the inhibition of DNA replication and repair, and RNA and protein synthesis. The Company is advancing the development of its WP1244 drug technology, which utilizes anthracycline and distamycin-based scaffolds to create small molecule agents.
