Ballard Power Systems Inc. (BLDP) is a renewable energy semiconductor manufacturing company based in British Columbia, Canada. 

The firm was founded in 1979. Ballard Power Systems specialises in a number of markets including:

• The development of fuel cells for buses, trucks, trains, cars and boats

• The development of fuel cell backup power systems for critical infrastructure markets with a focus on telecommunications 

• The development of large-scale stational power generation with fuel cells for backup, standby and peak shaving stationary applications that converts hydrogen into cost-effective electricity that may be used by the customer or sold back to the grid 

• The development of fuel cell solutions for battery-powered material handling equipment 

Some of the company’s key partners include Audi, ElDorado REV Group and Anglo American Platinum (ANGP).

The firm presented its first fuel cell buses in Vancouver in 1993, deployed 30 fuel cell buses to 10 European cities in 2003 and formed a joint venture with Guangdong Nation-Synergy Hydrogen Power Technology to produce fuel cell stacks in China in 2016. 

In 2020, it was reported that fuel cell electric vehicles powered by Ballard have driven over 50 million kilometres – enough to go around the Earth 1,250 times.

The company’s initial public offering (IPO) was in 1993 on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX). Ballard Power Systems Inc. went public on NASDAQ in 1995 where it is traded under the ticker symbol BLDP.
