Although the company, which was then known as Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio, was founded in 1923, it was not until 1938 that it incorporated. Throughout its history, Disney has grown from a cartoon studio to a multi-billion business, leading today’s entertainment industry.
Presently, the company operates in four business segments: Media Networks, Studio Entertainment, Parks Experiences and Products, and Direct-To-Consumer and International. Employing over 223,000 people in 2019, its business operations span the globe.

The company's first common stock was issued in 1940. It began trading over-the-counter (OTC) in 1946, right when the post-war economic boom was getting underway. Over the next 11 years, the stock traded OTC. During that time, Disney continued its business development and invented the modern-day massive theme park Disneyland in California in 1955.
Riding the tails of the park's successful opening, the business debuted on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). On November 12, 1957, Walt Disney stock went public at $13.88 a share. Since then, the company’s stock has split six times: in 1956, 1967, 1971, 1973, 1986, 1992 and 1998.
