The base currency is XLM. The counter currency is USD. The XLM/USD rate includes two currencies - crypto and traditional. The XLM/USD rate shows how much XLM is worth when measured against the American dollar. XLM is also referred to as the lumen. This is the native digital currency built into the Stellar network. Stellar was introduced in 2014 with 100 billion lumens which were originally called stellars. XLM facilitates multi-currency transactions and also plays an anti-spam role.
