Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical starts building ethylene unit in $3 billion upgrade
BEIJING, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical 600688.SS announced late on Sunday that it had started construction of a 1.2 million-metric-ton-per-year ethylene unit, the centerpiece of an upgrade project with an investment of around 20 billion yuan ($3.0 billion).
The company said it will shut its existing 700,000-ton-per-year ethylene unit
Once operational, the new unit will supply downstream industries with nearly 3 million tons of high-end chemical products and feedstocks for fine chemicals
The unit will use Sinopec’s proprietary low-energy ethylene separation technology, which the company said meets world-leading standards for safety, operational stability and energy efficiency
The broader upgrade involves building 15 units, revamping 5 and closing 18 within the existing plant site
Part of a project designated as a major Shanghai infrastructure development, the ethylene unit is expected to be completed by the end of October 2028
