VOLATILE WEEK, MODEST RESULTS FOR WALL STREET’S MAIN INDEXES

The Dow and S&P 500 finished lower on Friday, while technology shares found their footing, capping a volatile week for the market's AI trade. Investors are now turning their attention to a busy week ahead that includes several closely watched earnings reports and the Federal Reserve's latest policy meeting.

The Dow .DJI fell more than 1%, marking the day's steepest decline among the major indexes. The S&P 500 .SPX dipped 0.5%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq .IXIC ended little changed, down just 0.2%.

Most S&P 500 sectors closed lower. Consumer staples .SPLRCS led the declines with a loss of nearly 2%, while energy .SPNY was the clear standout, climbing around 2.5% and notching a record closing high. Tech .SPLRCT ended the day with a modest gain.

Beneath the surface, big banks .SPXBK, transports .DJT, biotech shares .NBI and gold and silver miners .XAU were among the session's laggards.

Meanwhile, parts of the technology complex rebounded from Thursday's selloff. Software and services stocks .SPLRCIS, along with semiconductor shares .SOX, each gained.

Among the week's bigger movers, regional banks .KRX rose roughly 4%, while gold and silver miners fell more than 8%.

Despite the week's volatility, the major indexes posted relatively modest changes overall. The Dow gained about 0.4%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq fell 0.5% and 0.7%, respectively.

Small caps stood out. The Russell 2000 .RUT advanced 2% for the week, snapping a six-week losing streak. The index's last six-week slide ended in October 2018.

Here is a snapshot of where markets stood moments after 4 p.m. ET.
