US STOCKS FINISH DOWN WITH BANK SHARES

US stocks ended lower on Tuesday, although the S&P 500 .SPX was close to flat, as bank shares fell following quarterly results from top firms including Goldman Sachs GS.N, Citigroup C.N, JPMorgan JPM.N and Wells Fargo WFC.N.

The S&P 500 banks index .SPXBK ended 1.7% lower. Shares of Citigroup dropped 5.6% following its results, while Wells Fargo fell 3.1%. Wells Fargo reported net interest income that missed estimates.

Goldman Sachs was down just 0.2% and JPMorgan eased 0.9%.

An index of semiconductors .SOX was down 0.2%. On Monday, the Broadcom AVGO.O CEO likened some of the investment flow into the sector to "casino gambling." Broadcom shares ended up 0.7%, while shares of Applied Materials AMAT.O fell 6.7%.

The bank results kick off the third-quarter S&P 500 earnings season. Analysts expect earnings from S&P 500 companies to have gained 30.6% year-over-year for the third quarter, with energy, technology and communication services leading sector earnings gains for the period, according to LSEG.

The S&P 500 healthcare index .SPXHC fell 1.3% and led declines among sectors on the day. Shares of Johnson & Johnson JNJ.N were down 5.7% despite the company reporting earnings that topped estimates.

Energy .SPNY, up 1.7%, led S&P 500 sector gainers.
