STOCKS MIXED AS CHIPS BOUNCE, EYES ON MIDTERMS
Wall Street was mixed on Tuesday after the opening bell rang on election day, with a chips comeback putting the Nasdaq in front.
The Philadelphia SE Semiconductor Index .SOX, which has become something of a proxy indicator for the AI trade, was on the rebound as bargain hunters swooped in. The index lost a whopping 11.6% in the last three sessions.
The S&P 500 joined the Nasdaq in positive territory while the blue-chip Dow was lower.
Growth .IGX had the early edge over value .IVX, with tech .SPLRCT and industrials .SPLRCI up the most among the S&P 500's 11 major sectors.
Early weak spots include consumer staples .SPLRCS, materials .SPLRCM and homebuilders .SPCOMHOME.
Among the Magnificent Seven group of AI-related momentum stocks, Nvidia NVDA.O was up most, while Apple AAPL.O, following CEO John Ternus' memory costs warning, was suffering the steepest percentage loss.
Market participants are looking ahead to today's midterm election results, which will hopefully provide decisive clues regarding the forward path of regulatory policy from Capitol Hill for the next two years.
Here's where things stood as of 10:15 a.m. EST:
