DOES DEMOCRAT ROUT MEAN PEACE COULD BREAK OUT?

As the dust settles in the wake of US voters' full-throated rebuke of President Trump's policies, investors are being pulled in multiple directions by contradictory analyst musings on the election's ramifications.

But one thing seems fairly apparent: a fully present congressional check on executive power is being interpreted as a step toward resolution of the Middle East quagmire.

Exhibit one would be US front-month WTI crude prices , which plunged as much as 8% on easing supply concerns, reflecting a greater likelihood that peace negotiations could yield something substantive.

Supporting that notion, the makers of war machinery are having a bad day. The S&P 1500 Aerospace Defense Index .SPCOMAED, aside from energy .SPNY and chips .SOX sectors, is among the day's biggest losers, last down around 2%.

"Democrats, but also many Republicans, now are aware that Americans do not wish to be involved in an Iran war and are tired of the high oil prices, and that was very much reflected in the election results," Oliver Pursche, senior vice president at Wealthspire Advisors, tells Reuters. "And so there is a belief that there will be a shift in policy toward Iran and the Iran war and that an end could be accelerated."
