Italy's CDP has no plan to bid for bond trading platform MTS, CEO says

By Reuters News

- Italian state lender CDP is not planning any bid to bring bond trading platform MTS under Italian control, CEO Dario Scannapieco said on Thursday.

Bloomberg reported last week that Rome was considering buying Euronext's 63% ENX.PA stake in MTS through CDP, to preserve national oversight of an infrastructure seen as strategic for managing Italy's public debt market.

"On MTS there is nothing," Scannapieco told reporters on the sidelines of CDP's 2026 Investor Day in Milan.

CDP holds an 8.1% stake in pan-European exchange operator Euronext which also owns the Milan Stock Exchange, known as Borsa Italiana.

Under a compromise agreed by EU finance ministers on centralised capital markets supervision on Friday, Italy would retain veto powers over any changes to MTS's management functions, an Italian government official told Reuters.

"We support greater market integration. As happened with the euro, when supervisory powers were transferred from national authorities to the European Central Bank, there needs to be a balance between the degree of centralisation and maintaining supervision that remains closer to local markets," Scannapieco said.
