Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is a US-based technology company, providing IT solutions on a global scale. The company manufactures a wide range of processors, graphics, video and multimedia products.

Advanced Micro Devices is one of the world’s leaders in the microprocessor industry. AMD’s products include accelerated processing units (APU), graphics processing units (GPUs) as well as professional GPUs, chipsets, System-on-Chip (SoC) products, embedded and server processors, and technology for game consoles.

Generally, the company’s processors and graphics solutions are designed for both laptop and desktop devices, servers, work stations, semi-custom and embedded applications.

Based in Santa Clara, California, AMD operates across 50 locations in 31 countries. The company has more than a dozen R&D facilities, about 25 global sales offices as well as assembly/test manufacturing facilities in Asia.

Advanced Micro Devices was formally incorporated on May 1, 1969 with headquarters in Sunnyvale, California. The company was founded by Jerry Sanders and seven former employees of Fairchild Semiconductor, a pioneer in integrated circuits and transistors production.

At the very beginning, AMD focused on manufacturing logic chips. In 1970, the company delivered its first proprietary product – the Am2501 logic counter – which sold quite successfully. Finding new ways to compete, AMD broadened its offering and started producing microprocessors compatible with IBM computers, programmable logic devices, high-performance memories and networking and communication chips.

In May 2019, AMD celebrated its 50th anniversary. A few months later the company launched its second-generation EPYC processors for data centres, later announcing that Google and Twitter have joined the roster of customers adopting its innovation. Other industry’s big names using the new EPYC chips include Microsoft, Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Dell Technologies.

In September 1972, the company went public, selling 525,000 shares at $15 per share, bringing in $7.87m. In 1979, Advanced Micro Devices debuted on the New York Stock Exchange. By the end of its fifth year, AMD was making $26.5m in annual sales. However, in 2015 it transferred its stock to the NASDAQ Stock Exchange.
