Total crypto market cap: approximately $2.7 trillion, the combined value of all tracked cryptocurrencies, according to CoinGecko Global Charts
Total market cap or a single coin? ‘Crypto market capitalization’ usually means the combined value of every cryptocurrency. It's a different figure from the market cap of a single coin, such as bitcoin's own market cap, which is smaller and tracked separately.
Which figures are used? Aggregators differ by a few percent because they include different sets of coins and exchanges. CoinGecko shows about $2.73 trillion; CoinMarketCap shows about $2.64 trillion, both for the same date in September 2026.
Total cryptocurrency market cap is calculated by summing every tracked coin:
Bitcoin alone accounts for about 56.8% of that total (its “dominance”), Ethereum for about 11.2%, and stablecoins such as Tether and USD Coin for about 11.2% (≈$307bn).

The entire crypto market is worth roughly a tenth of gold's market cap, and less than 2% of the value of all publicly traded companies combined. Comparisons like this are historical snapshots, not a forecast that one market will overtake another.
About $2.7 trillion in September 2026, the combined value of all tracked cryptocurrencies, according to CoinGecko.
For a single coin, market cap is circulating supply × price. For the whole market, it's the sum of that calculation across every tracked coin. It measures the total dollar value of coins in existence, not trading volume or how many people hold them.
By adding up circulating supply × price for every coin an aggregator tracks. CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap differ by a few percent because they track different sets of coins and exchanges.
The share of the total crypto market cap held by bitcoin alone, currently about 56.8%. It can rise or fall even if bitcoin's own market cap doesn't change, if other coins grow or shrink faster.
Market cap is the total value of coins in existence. Trading volume is how much was bought and sold over a period (usually 24 hours). A coin can have a large market cap with relatively low trading volume, or vice versa.
Market cap uses circulating supply (coins already in existence). FDV uses the maximum possible supply a coin could ever have, so FDV is equal to or higher than market cap, and the gap is largest for coins that release supply gradually.
About $4.4 trillion, reached in the fourth quarter of 2025, according to CoinLaw. The market corrected sharply in October 2025 amid roughly $19 billion in liquidations.
