Which price is used? Most calculations use the spot price. The World Gold Council uses the LBMA Gold Price PM, which is why its own valuation — $29tn at end-Q2 2026 — reflects an earlier, lower price than today's.
Gold's market capitalization is calculated with a simple formula:
Applied to current data:
222,600 tonnes (World Gold Council, end-Q2 2026) × 32,150.75 troy ounces per tonne = 7.16bn troy ounces 7.16bn troy ounces × $4,345.55/oz (Trading Economics, 11 September 2026) ≈ $31.1 trillion
Published figures for the market capitalization of gold range from about $28tn to $34tn, depending on which above-ground stock estimate a source uses and which date it prices that stock at.

Jewellery accounts for 45% of above-ground gold, investment forms (bars, coins, ETFs) for 23%, and central banks for 17.5%. Gold ETFs — the most actively traded slice — hold only 1.8% of the total stock behind gold's market capitalisation.
Market capitalisation (market cap) normally means share price multiplied by shares in issue. Gold has no shares and no issuer, so the term is borrowed — it means the estimated value of all above-ground gold. Four things get called "the market cap of gold" or "gold market capitalisation": gold the metal (this page), gold mining companies such as Newmont, Barrick and Agnico Eagle (a much smaller figure), Barrick Mining under the ticker GOLD (a single company that ranks for this search term), and tokenised gold such as PAXG and XAUT (a small fraction of the physical market).
About 222,600 tonnes, according to the World Gold Council's end-Q2 2026 estimate. The stock grows by roughly 1.6% a year from mine production (World Gold Council, Gold Demand Trends Q2 2026).
It peaked at about $39.7tn on 28 January 2026, when gold hit a record $5,589.38 an ounce (Trading Economics). By September 2026 it had fallen to $31.1tn — down 22.3%, or $8.6tn — though the price was still up around 19% since the start of the year. Past price movements don't indicate future performance.
Published figures range from about $28tn to $34tn. The gap comes from two things: which above-ground stock estimate a source uses, and which date it prices that stock at. The most common cause of a lower figure is an outdated stock estimate — several calculators still use the World Gold Council's 216,265-tonne figure for end-2024, rather than the current 222,600-tonne estimate for end-Q2 2026, a difference of about $0.9 trillion.
Almost entirely the gold price, since above-ground stock grows by only about 1.6% a year. In Q2 2026, central banks bought a net 289 tonnes (+62% year on year), gold ETFs saw outflows of 44.8 tonnes, and jewellery demand fell 17% to 278.2 tonnes even as its value rose 14% (World Gold Council, Gold Demand Trends Q2 2026).
An estimated 61,000 tonnes of reserves remain underground (World Gold Council) — about 27% of the above-ground stock — worth roughly $8.5 trillion at current prices.
