Square Earns Best in Class in Javelin Strategy & Research’s 2026 Small Business Point-of-Sale System Scorecard

By GlobeNewswire

LIVONIA, Mich., Oct. 29, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Javelin Strategy & Research has released its 2026 Small Business Point-of-Sale (POS) System Scorecard, evaluating 15 platforms across eight categories for merchants with less than $1 million in annual sales. The findings show that leading platforms are expanding beyond checkout, combining payments with tools to help merchants manage inventory, accounting, e-commerce, financing, marketing, delivery, and workforce needs.

Square earns Best in Class as the scorecard’s most complete general-purpose small-business platform. Its broad performance across categories, including top scores in Vertical Market Flexibility, the most heavily weighted category, and Embedded Finance, secured the top ranking. Square also performed strongly in human resources, order and delivery, and omnichannel capabilities.

Shopify POS and Lightspeed are named Overall Leaders, each with distinct strengths. Shopify POS stood out in e-commerce, omnichannel selling, customer data, and marketing, while Lightspeed excelled in inventory management for merchants with more complex needs.

Square, Shopify POS, Lightspeed, and Clover formed a clear top tier. Their average score was nearly twice that of the rest of the field, and scores dropped sharply after fourth-place Clover. The group also performed more consistently across merchant workflows, with fewer gaps in supply chain, order and delivery, and human resources.

“The POS market at the $1 million merchant level continues to grow, and payments companies that don’t have an SMB POS offering are finding themselves locked out of the market. At the same time, merchants expect more features and functions than ever before,” said Don Apgar, Director of Javelin's Merchant practice.

The strongest platforms help merchants run, understand, and grow their businesses through one connected platform. To identify the right fit, Javelin recommends that POS resellers start with how a merchant sells, fulfills orders, manages staff, and tracks inventory, rather than with terminal features.
