RLX Technology Inc. (RLX) is the leading e-cigarette brand in China. The company is heavily investing in a number of the industry’s key activities, from scientific research, technology and product development to supply chain management and offline distribution. 

From its establishment in 2018, the business has launched five series of rechargeable closed-system e-vapour products, with various value-added features, under its RELX brand. In 2020, RLX Technology had partnerships with 110 authorised distributors to supply their products to more than 5,000 RELX branded partner stores and over 100,000 other retail outlets nationwide, covering nearly 250 cities across China.

The company went public in January 2021. RLX shares are listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the ticker symbol RLX.

The business was founded by Ying (Kate) Wang, former head of Uber China, in January 2018. While it sells its e-vapour products only in China, the size of the nation’s market is immense. Based on the report from China Insights Consultancy (CIC), the Chinese vaping market generated $1.5bn in retail sales value in 2019, with the figure expected to grow exponentially in the coming years. In 2019, there were nearly 286.7 million adult users of combustible tobacco products in the country, making China one of the globe’s largest potential markets for e-vapour products. In September 2020, RLX Technology had a 62.6 per cent market share by retail sales value.

On December 31, 2020, RLX Technology filed F-1 documents with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. In its initial public offering on January 21, 2021, it sold 116.5 million American depositary shares (ADSs), with each ADS representing one Class A ordinary share. The business priced its shares at $12 each, raising as much as $1.4bn and giving the company a valuation of $18.6bn. Citigroup and China Renaissance were the underwriters on the deal.
