Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched the so-called ‘Gati Shakti’ scheme, an INR100trn ($1.3trn) multi-modal infrastructure connectivity blueprint to increase productivity of industry, enhance their competitiveness, support local manufacturers and help in developing new economic zones.
The completion of the plan will result in a reduction in logistic costs, an increase in cargo handling capacity and reduce the turnaround time for modes of transportation, Modi said in federal capital New Delhi.
The Gati Shakti plan joins different departments for coordinated development of road, railway, aviation and to agriculture projects. The plan will address the working on the basis of a master plan for optimum utilisation of resources.
The Prime Minister also said that due to the wide gap between macro planning and micro implementation problems of lack of coordination, lack of advance information, thinking and working in silos are leading to a wastage of budget. Shakti gets divided instead of getting multiplied or enhanced.
Highlighting some of the factions of infrastructure development, Modi stated that work is in progress to lay an over 16,000km gas pipeline network across the country, which aims to be finished in six years. Metro rail network in the country is being extended to 1,000km from its current 700km. The number of food parks is also being increased from 19 to 40.
Ahead of time
Projects are being fast-tracked to help increase the income of the farmers and fishermen. The latest Gati Shakti scheme will incorporate government’s infrastructure schemes in the road, aviation, inland waterways, and dry and land ports.
“We have not only developed a work culture of completing the projects within the stipulated time frame but efforts are now being made to complete the projects ahead of time,” Modi added in the statement.
Dedicated economic clusters specific to textiles, pharmaceuticals, fishing, electronics, defence and industrial segments will be covered under the scheme to improve connectivity.
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade will lead the execution and it will monitor and implement all the projects.
