Energy Recovery has secured a new contract to supply its PX Q650 Pressure Exchanger devices for a major new seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant in Saudi Arabia. On completion, the project is set to rank among the 10 largest desalination plants in the world

Based in California, US, the company is a global technology leader that designs and manufactures energy-efficiency devices for water desalination, wastewater treatment, and commercial refrigeration.

The contract will see Energy Recovery provide its latest and highest-capacity PX Pressure Exchanger technology for the large-scale desalination project, supporting the plant’s energy-efficient seawater reverse osmosis operations.

Under the contract, Energy Recovery will supply PX Q650 energy recovery devices for the SWRO desalination facility.

The PX Q650 is designed to recover energy from the high-pressure reject stream generated during the reverse osmosis process. By transferring this energy back into the feedwater system, the technology significantly reduces the amount of energy required to convert seawater into potable water.

Energy Recovery said the PX Q650 was engineered for the performance, scale and operating requirements of the world’s largest desalination facilities.

The device was launched in March 2026 and features a single moving part and a design life of approximately 30 years, helping to reduce operating costs over the lifetime of a desalination plant.

The project comes as Saudi Arabia continues to expand its desalination capacity to strengthen national water security. Desalination supplies more than 70% of the Kingdom’s potable water, making energy-efficient water production a key component of Saudi Arabia’s long-term water strategy and Vision 2030 objectives.

Energy Recovery’s PX technology has been used in the seawater desalination industry for more than three decades. According to the company, its technology has reduced desalination energy consumption by up to 60% and currently supports the treatment of approximately 48.5 million cubic metres of water per day globally.

The company estimates that its technology helps customers save approximately $8 billion annually in energy costs.
