By Reuters News

- Mining major Rio Tinto RIO.AX, RIO.L said on Monday it had commissioned a trial facility to capture carbon dioxide from blast-furnace gas at Chinese steelmaker Shougang Group's operations.

Here are some more details:

  • The facility is designed to capture carbon dioxide contained in blast furnace gas produced during iron-making.

  • The facility, located at Shougang's Jingtang base in China, can process up to 3,000 cubic metres of blast furnace gas per hour and capture up to 10,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.

  • The commissioning of the facility forms part of a memorandum of understanding signed in 2022 by Rio Tinto and Shougang to research and develop technologies that could help reduce carbon emissions across the steel value chain.

  • Shares of Rio Tinto were down 0.5% to A$164.2, as of 0102 GMT, while the broader benchmark index .AXJO was up 0.3%.
