- The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has sued Amazon AMZN.O in Boston federal court, alleging Amazon Web Services' data security technology infringes two of its patents.

  • MIT said in the lawsuit, filed on Friday, that the physical unclonable function (PUF) technology used by AWS to create unique cryptographic keys violates its patent rights

  • Spokespeople for Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the complaint on Monday

  • The lawsuit said that Amazon uses cloud-security technology supplied by software company Synopsys that infringes PUF patents covering an MIT professor's innovations

  • Synopsys is not a defendant in the case

  • MIT asked the court for an unspecified amount of monetary damages

  • The university filed a similar lawsuit against Microsoft in Texas in May that is still ongoing

The case is Massachusetts Institute of Technology v. Amazon Web Services Inc, US District Court for the District of Massachusetts, No. 1:26-cv-14600
